The Writer's Introductions to These Studies
By Rev. Dale Burden
This is the first edition of the new Heritage series of Sunday School lessons, a study designed to take us through the Bible in 7 years. I am honored to be the author of these lessons and assure you I take this responsibiblity seriously. During the time I was preparing this first quarterly, I read a piece from Charles Spurgeon's wonderful daily devotional book, Morning and Evening, that sounded a note I felt was so appropriate. It is taken from Luke 24:27,45.
The first verse mentions how Jesus expounded the Scriptures to two of His disciples. In the second, he notes Jesus "opened their understanding that they might understand the scriptures." His comments were in "In the first work He has many fellow-labors, but in the second He stands alone; many can prepare the mind to receive the scriptures. Our Lord differs from all others teachers; they reach the ear, but He instructs the heart."
It is my prayer that these lessons will be helpful by correctly explaining God's Word. Ath the same time, mindful that only He can reach and instruct the heart, I will be praying each one who reads these lessons will first ask the Lord Himself to open their understanding. Regardless of who the writer or teacher is, we must have His help for our hearts. Let us pray for one another that God will guide me as I write and you as you read.
